TOOLMAKER:  A general description

Builds, remodels, maintains all types of tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and gauges.  Uses various types of material, metal alloys, plastic, layout work from blueprints or drawings.  make templates, sketches and determines the work process.  Performs all types of fittings, assembly and inspection to required tolerances.  Uses hand tools and precision measuring instruments and equipment.  Required to operate all machine tool equipment common to Tool Room and perform minor maintenance on this equipment.  Perform their own heat treating processes, hardening, tempering, drawing, normalizing, carbonizing, casehardening, cyaniding, of various metals and alloys by controlled heating and cooling to obtain physical characteristics.  Toolmaker will use various types of heat treat furnaces and hardness testing equipment.  Involved in dimensional control of all sheet metal welded sub-assemblies and welding systems such as Robogate, Lay Down Side Frame, Underbody and Cartrac through the use of prescribed checking fixtures, CIMMS fixture and layout equipment.  Maintains all tools and fixtures throughout the plant including dies, cutters, punches, locators, etc.
