Latino vs. Hispanic

Hispanic is an English word that originally referred to people from Spain and eventually expanded to include the populations of its colonies in South and Central America . Latino is a Spanish word—hence the feminine form Latina —that refers to people with roots in Latin America and generally excludes the Iberian Peninsula .

In politics, generally speaking, Democrats use Latino more often than Republicans, who favor Hispanic. Today, people are actually confused on which term is applicable when referring to the person or culture relating to Spanish. The terms Hispanic and Latino are being even more confused now with the popularity of some Latino stars.  So what are the possible differences for Latino and Hispanic terms?

The first difference lies in the different types of figures of speech for these words.   Hispanic is an adjective while Latino could be an adjective or a noun. Hispanic comes from the residents of the Iberian Peninsula which includes Portugal and Spain .  While Latino originated from the residents of Latin America which includes: Mexico , Central America , Cuba and Puerto Rico .

In the United States , Latino is being used for our neighbors who are South of the border. And right now, there are so many Latino superstars that are popular in Hollywood , thus the term is getting more popular than the term Hispanic.

One important thing that you need to remember when trying to differentiate the term Latino and Hispanic is that Latino pertains to the countries or cultures that belonged to Latin America , while Hispanic describes the language or culture that were previously under the Spanish colony. Hispanic refers to the Spanish language. You can be a Latino even if you are not really Spanish-speaking as long as you originated from the nations of Latin America .
